Preventatives

dvm-78Preventative care is very important when it comes to our pets. Heartworm prevention, flea prevention, and tick prevention can be given to help our pets live a healthier and happier life.

Heartworm prevention can be started as early as your puppy's first visit to the veterinarian for their vaccinations. As a puppy, they will not need to be tested for heartworms before being put on heartworm prevention. By the age of 6-8 months, we will begin testing for heartworms if the patient has not been on heartworm prevention regularly. Because of the nature of heartworm prevention, each patient must be tested for heartworms to determine which heartworm preventative is right for them. If a patient shows a lapse in prevention of 3 months or more, they must be retested before prevention will be sent home. Heartworms are transferred by the bite of an infected mosquito. There are some species of mosquitoes that even take their blood meals indoors, putting every dog at risk no matter whether they live inside or outside.

Flea and Tick prevention can be started as early as 8 weeks of age. We recommend keeping your animals on prevention year round to help keep the numbers reduced in your pet's environment. Ticks can transfer diseases after feeding on the dog for 12-48 hours. Fleas can cause skin allergies and potentially even anemia if the animal is infested. Prevention is offered in multiple forms for both cats and dogs. If there are any questions regarding safety of the medication for animals that are pregnant, lactating, breeding, seizure prone, or heartworm positive, please don't hesitate to call us for more information.
